These paintings and works on paper were influenced by the expressionist 1950’s artist by the American painter, Franz Klein. When Gutierrez read about the Sixth Street Bridge being demolished it stirred many childhood emotions and thus captured in B&W abstracts of current and past Sixth Street Bridge.
As a little boy, my mother holding my hand, would walk over the bridge to the downtown area and while she shopped, I’d be at Union Station shoe shining men’s shoes. I lived to witness its demise in 2016. –Roberto Gutierrez
